100Gbps Networks Are Here… Are You Prepared?

There has been a lot of discussion surrounding the advancement of 100Gbps networks. Our insatiable appetite for better, faster, and more reliable network speeds warrant the adoption of 100Gbps networks. Let’s re-examine Gilder’s Law, which states that backbone bandwidth on a single cable is now a thousand times greater than the average monthly traffic exchanged across the entire global communications infrastructure five years ago. In addition, more information can be sent over a single cable in a second than was sent over the entire internet in 1997 in a month.

Stop and think about this for a minute. The last time we witnessed such a drastic leap in network bandwidths occurred when 10Gbps jumped to 40Gbps.  But times have changed, and it’s apparent that 10Gbps and 40Gbps networks can’t handle the increase in data growth or the “the need for speed” required by today’s enterprises. For example, massive amounts of data and large spikes in traffic create an environment where traditional network performance monitoring (NPM) architectures struggle and ultimately fail to manage. In addition, these architectures are impeded by scalability bottlenecks caused by aggregation devices, performance limitations, and high cost of tools.
